Football: American of Nigerian origin Noyewu complaint of racial insult
Nigerian-born American Oguchi Onyewu, defender of Standard Liege, has filed a complaint Tuesday against a player the club Anderlecht in Brussels for a racial insult. Onyewu Jelle Van Damme accused of having dealt with "dirty ape" last week at the match between the two clubs decisive for the title of champion Belgian football. Van Damme has denied being the author of such statements. The lawyer for Onyewu, Jean-Louis Dupont, filed a complaint to his client before a court in Brussels. The U.S. international has also left Belgium to prepare with the team of the United States, the Confederations Cup, to be held from June 14 to 28 in South Africa, and two qualifying matches at the World 2010. Onyewu has justified its action in the courts by the fact that racist behavior in the field are still too common in European football. AP
